Keeping Local Search in Perspective

misspelled-signs.jpg
Everyone in the search marketing sector seems convinced that local search is the next big thing. I've been more skeptical. For one thing, ever since I have been working in online marketing (1996), companies have been promising that they have the magic bullet solution that is going to shift the $14 billion yellow-page ad market onto the Internet. So far, I haven't seen much of anything make a dent. Buying ads on Google and Overture is still complicated, and I haven't yet seen a solution that's going to make it top-of-mind and cookie-cutter simple for Joe's Barber Shop.

Moreover, as this NY Times piece notes, many small businesses still can't spell basic English words right on the signs they hang up outside of their businesses. So they're going to get into keyword bid rank jockeying? Not the majority of them, that's for sure.
