Open Source Advertising

Another favorite trend I have in the world of marketing is Open Source Advertising. ClickZ reported on an example last month where some 25,000 people in the community of Firefox users pooled funds (around a quarter million dollars) to run a full-page ad for the beloved open-source browser in the New York Times.

iPod ad, a labor of love
Now the latest version of open-source advertising making the rounds is a gorgeous homemade ad for Apple's iPod by a California school teacher.

I'd love to see more companies encourage their faithful to do "reality ads" like these. How about a contest, with the best one airing on TV? On the other hand, keeping it at arm's length and letting it grow totally organically will keep the volunteered ads that much more pure, labors of love, and freeing the corporate brand from copyright problems (such as this iPod's use of a song that I doubt the creator secured the rights for), but then, not many brands besides Apple may be likely to inspire that kind of user devotion.
