In addition to being one of the principals of MarketingWonk, my buddy and colleague Olivier Travers has made a name for himself over at TheEndofFree.com as an expert in tracking the trend of web sites charging readers for content. When I first published my rant on micropayments (see two posts below), Olivier neglected to link to it immediately, telling me privately he had his doubts about my theory that PayPal should be the tool to own the micropayment space.
Now Olivier seems to be coming around to my idea, since he observed that PayPal has frozen the account of micropayment service provider BitPass, while their senior biz dev manager, Peter Ashley, is slated to be a speaker at the forthcoming Micropayments Conference hosted by Peppercoin, another micropayments service provider. Olivier speculates, "[Does PayPal] plan to acquire Peppercoin and put the pressure on Bitpass?" Hmmm.
Unfortunately, the Micropayments Conference is the same day (November 3) as the launch of Ad-Tech, where I will be a speaker that day (moderating the 3:15 panel on "Blogging for Business"), so I'm not sure how much of the micropayments event I'll be able to take in (they're both in NYC at least). I'll update when I know more.
I keep telling Olivier, meanwhile, "When are you just going to give into the fact that I'm always right?"
