Live and learn. This is a new one on me: spamming referrer logs. I like to check my web traffic logs like a caged monkey on crack pellets. Today, I see that according to the logs for in-bound referral links to our new site MarketingFix, we would appear to be getting significant amounts of traffic from a couple of nasty porno sites, the kind that hijack your browsers till you reboot your computer. Seemed quite unlikely these folks had actually written something about our marketing site's launch for their readers.
No, turns out there is a new way to drive traffic illegitimately: spam a site's web logs with fake referral links to make the webmaster click through to investigate. My MarketingFix co-blogger John Engler explains here and here. These jackasses are among the purveyors of such "services."
