SpamNet Stumbles, Users Cry Foul

I've raved enough about Cloudmark's SpamNet P2P email filtering tool, without ever having used it (I'm on Eudora, a platform they don't yet support), that I thought I'd pass through this Wired piece suggesting they're facing significant criticism from users, including some who accuse Cloudmark of selling them out to spammers, a charge Cloudmark vehemently denies. What triggered the problems, according to Cloudmark, was it tried to implement some major backend changes to SpamNet that brought the network down and suddenly exposed people to their old volumes of spam again. That, plus other network issues. Cloudmark has the glitch fixed and the network is back up, but the Wired piece says some users still claim volumes of spam remain higher now than before they started using the tool. I'd love to hear feedback from any Executive Summary readers who are using SpamNet. Sorry if I steered you wrong.

UPDATE: One reader has written to say he's still very happy using SpamNet. I should add that prior to this reported criticism, I've heard strong endorsements for the tool from several other power-user friends.

And, another reader writes:

I have used SpamNet for about a month now. At first it pulled some of my normal mail into the Spam folder, but a couple of unblocks took care of that. Now, after using it so long, it seems to make much better decisions about what is and isn't spam. Anyone using Outlook ought to use this little tool.

Requested Feature? Don't alert me new mail has arrived if it is on its way to the Spam folder.

And a third reader, Olivier Travers, writes "Cloudmark still works rather well. The main minus is it's rather slow, but it does remove a lot of garbage."
