Advertisers Might Have the Last Laugh on TiVo

TV advertisers have been generally pooping their pants over TiVo, the digital video record that allows TV watchers to record all their favorite shows almost effortlessly and skip over unwanted TV commercials with the click of a button. Well this piece in Slate, "TiVo, We Hardly Knew Ye," says that TiVo has burned through $400 million in investments and has only $26 million in cash reserves, while profitability remains out of reach. Of course, anyone who thinks that if TiVo dies the challenge to TV advertising is over is just deluding themselves.

We live in a period of profound change to the advertising world. Whether TiVo survives or not, television is going to look much different at the end of this decade compared to just a few years ago.
